First stage of China-Vietnam boundary finished

(ABC Radio Australia News) - China and Vietnam have completed the first stage of marking their land border after a four month minesweeping operation.

Beijing's official China News Service says a Sino Vietnamese survey team has fixed 10 new boundary marker stones and created a five kilometre-long boundary line.

The two communist countries fought a brief but bloody war along their common border in 1979 after a Vietnamese invasion of Cambodia.

The surveying of the boundary and erection of the stone markers meant clearing land mines from an estimated million square kilometres to allow surveyers in.
