Foreign Lawyers Disallowed From Defending Clients in Vietnamese Courts

(Financial Times) - The Vietnamese Government issued a decree on July 22, to take effect immediately, banning foreign law offices and individual lawyers from defending clients in local courts. Decree 87/2003/ND-CP permits those offices and lawyers to provide legal consultation and other legal services when they employ Vietnamese lawyers to work in their offices.

Foreign lawyers must study at local law universities and be able to meet all requirements of a Vietnamese lawyer.

The government asserts there is no discrimination against foreign lawyers in Vietnam.
